We discovered real Reuben sandwiches in New York and they were a revelation. Thick slices of rye bread with a stack of slow cooked corned meat and/or pastrami with slaw or a pickle and mayo is a (large) slice of heaven. Oven poached quinces

I love autumn for the hard, craggy, bright yellow fruit which turns into beautiful rose scented, ruby coloured segments with a few hours of tender cooking in the oven. The longer you cook them the darker they become, what a wonder! From my experience, baking them in the oven is the easiest way because they can gently cook undisturbed. I lived in France for a year between school and university. Food was important to me, even then, so I bought this blank journal in Italy specifically so I could ask my host mother to write her recipes down. I will post Isabelle’s crepe recipe another day. Waffles for breakfast

I bought my waffle maker for $1 from a garage sale about 8 years ago. It has travelled with me and made many batches of delicious waffles. I think that waffles have a reputation for being hard to make, but they aren’t any different to making a batch of pancakes.
